I'm not really into high school stories (but I did enjoy Ouran), this one however seems to have this kind of feel of innocence to it. I think it's somewhat adorable. Plus the unicorn at the end was kind of funny :D. And just like you said, the lack of a love story works really in favor for this title. If only I could access it in a store...
