Nanowrimo Poll 2011!

It’s that time of year again! A little later than last year, but that just means you’ll have to get your votes in fast.

For those who don’t know what’s going on, every year in November, I write a novel for NaNoWriMo. And every year, I cannot choose a novel of the ones I have on my list to write. Therefore, I try and get the internet to choose for me. And don’t bother asking which one I prefer, because I can’t decide anyway. I keep changing my mind, so I leave it up to you and which one you want to see me write.

The same rules apply as last year. The poll is in the sidebar. Poll closes on October 25th at 5:55 am PST. Everyone gets 3 votes. Spread this post to all your friends, enemies andanyone you know with an obsessive need to take random polls on the internet.

And now, the options!

The Sword Prince
The young prince runs afoul of a basilisk in the forest. His only hope to survive is the witch of the forest who curses him to become a sword. A century later, he is pulled out from the bottom of the lake where he has been slumbering and he awakens to his kingdom being overrun by dark magic. In order to break the curse and keep from turning back into a sword once more, he must help his kingdom and his descendants.

Arcleo
The prophesy says that the princess would come back to free the land. Mirabella thinks that is her for no other reason than she thinks it deserves to be her. When a party of the old king’s men come through their little inn on the outskirts of the kingdom looking for young women who bear the mark of the princess, she goes with them. Unfortunately for her, every young woman bears the mark and she will have to go through quite a bit to prove that the prophesy really is about her.

Sky of Butterflies
Mateo and his sister, Serafina, have broken out of the orphanage that was too poor to continue to keep them to try to make their way on their own. In their world, Robots operating under a dictator have taken over. Mateo soon discovers that there are many people after him and his little sister for reasons he is trying to learn and tries to protect them both, but soon discovers that he might be more dangerous to her if he stays by her side.

Creatures in the Halls
As the new teacher in school, she’s got certain responsibilities. Teach the kids English. Mark papers. Protect them from the invisible creatures that prey on them. Cassandra has a vendetta against the creatures who tormented her throughout high school, though now she’s back to get rid of them for good, but that’s not all. On top of their defeat, she needs to know what they are and what they’ve been after all these years.

Seniors
Getting kidnapped by mute goth kids was not what Max wanted to do on a Thursday night. Granted, when they showed him the men in suits who broke into his house and took out his parents, he was a little more inclined to follow. He’s still not sure what’s going on, but slowly he’s starting to find out why he’s being collected along with several other teenagers. The goth kids watching over them seem to know what’s happening, but aren’t saying anything, leaving the rest of them to figure out just what’s going on.

Divided
Aaron apparently missed quite a bit while he was away, such as the disappearance and return of his best friend, Caelin. He turned up part way through summer, but Cae won’t talking about it, which might be just as well as they’re about to start university. Several faces from Cae’s past start showing up and Aaron gets pulled into a world the world that Cae just tried to escape from as he tries to figure out just what happened while he was away.

The Jabberwocky’s Book
Alice is back for another semester at Lucena Academy. Wonderland is still on her mind, with the Queen of Hearts still at large, the Cheshire Cat mercifully absent and the Jabberwock’s book offering tantalizing bits of information. The book, along with several other things around the school, goes missing and Alice knows she must find it, for it may be the only way to save Wonderland, but her only clues are strange green feathers left behind at every crime scene.

Happy New Years!

It’s a new year and, since I’ve already talked about last year,  it’s time to talk about the plans for the next year. No resolutions this time around, just plans of various sorts. I did all right last time, but meh. Onward!

Put out a Syndicate book
It’s planned, half written, and one’s even being properly edited now. PaperBox Books is interested, so I’m hoping they’ll like all the stories. I still need to write 3 stories for the book I’m working on and then edit everything, but it’s super exciting. Must work super hard!

Get out something for Final Snow (And rename)
VIcki and I are both so busy, but I’d like to have the first episode done by the end of the year. Or, you know, at least the trailer. Have some stuff we can sit on and put out something. Still, I have to find voice actors and hopefully track down someone to do sound and make the soundtrack. Also, I need to rename and I need to do more edits and writing and cutting the script into episodes. Should be interesting.

Finish Sybil of Destiny (And rename)
It’s had an edit done. It really needs another one, though, and once that’s done, I’m keeping it around so that I can possibly get it published. Its not in Wipe continuity, so maybe it has a shot. Well, not strictly in Wipe continuity, anyway.

Start on Dreamscape
I wrote Dreamscape a while ago and now I’m thinking it’s about time to get around to finally rewriting it. It really does need a total rewrite. I think I know how I’m going to rework the story now, so it’s about time to take it, a chapter at a time, and start fixing it into something I can actually edit.

Keep up the videos
The videos are really fun. I want to keep them up, maybe even do a full year’s worth of them. Maybe even do longer ones more often. Heck, maybe even get a real camera (Just using a Canon Powershot from a couple years ago) and do something with actual production value. Heh, no, real production values are not happening.

I’m sure there’s more. There’s other things I want to do, but not that I’ve necessarily planned on. Plot out Twilight (Not the crappy sparkling vampire series) and Atlantis Project, for instance. And there’s a webcomic I’ve been asked to write. With any luck, it will be a productive and creative year. Should be fun.

Day 3 – Awkward Conversation Padding!

I have been weirdly dizzy all day today. It’s been… not so great. I can’t seem to concentrate on anything for long and everything keeps moving despite staying stationary. Writing today is hard.

Current Word Count: 14002

From Chapter 3

“He said they were going to come back and get us again. We wouldn’t remember it and were free to go about our lives, but we were going to be going back there now and then. We’d be returned to our lives again with no memory of what happened and then they would keep doing it, I think. And no contacting the authorities. Something about ending up like that other girl.”

“Yeah, there was that other girl,” Calvin said, nodding. “Um… Liza or something like that. She was in another cell, right?”

“Yeah, I don’t remember much about her,” Jayde said. “She was the good option, right? Disobey and you could get shot or end up like her.”

“This is like something out of a horror movie.”

“So what’s there to worry about?” Morgan finally piped in again.  “That explains everything, right? They said we wouldn’t remember, so we don’t remember a thing. And if they’re going to take us again, it’s not like we’re going to even know its happening, so what’s the problem? As long as it’s not in the middle of something important, then we’re fine.”

They muddled over it in quiet contemplation over their food for a few moments, saying nothing to anyone. They glanced at one another, but weren’t sure what to say about it. They were quite literally stuck, not sure what to do. What would they do about people who would kidnap them without them even knowing it? Especially when they didn’t even know how they did it. Heck, they weren’t even certain how they managed it the first time.

Lira felt that strain once again between her shoulders, a little more coming back to her but nothing that concerned anyone else. There was pain there, something breaking out of her back combined with a fluffy black blanket. It didn’t really make any sense to her, so she continued to say nothing, though got the distinct feeling that she made a mistake in there that she was not anxious to repeat should she remember.

Shane pulled out something from his own burger after biting into it and looked at it oddly. He garnered a few odd looks from around the table from the way he regarded it before he finally spoke. “This… is a pickle.”

Raven Project: Setting

Okay, so time for a bit of a confession. I’m cheating on the setting this year. I’m using a real place and an actual time for this all to take place this year. Yes, I know, it’s not really cheating, but it feels like it to me. I usually make up a new setting and set it in an ambient time somewhere, but this time around, it’s set in a place and time I know.

The time is 2004. It’s the start of the school year and, if I remember rightly, a very pivotal fall for a certain university campus. SFU Surrey finally got the funding to move into a brand new campus now floating above the mall, looking down on the patrons instead of hiding away in a corner from them. The campus was supposed to be an architectural wonder, but the students shifting to the new system was a little more important on the level of our characters.

Methinks I’m going to have to avoid a little bit of soap boxing while I’m writing this year. Or maybe go with it, since it will do awesome for my word count.

The old Betaspace was left behind, looked back with different opinions by different people. The older the student it seemed, the more they missed the little hole in the wall. The younger, the more they were looking forward to the new, huge campus. Or so I remember it.

Betaspace, however, has not been forgotten in this story. It still plays quite a big part, even if the vast majority of the characters are first year and have never been. Terrible, horrible things await them there.

Er… I mean…

Candy. Candy and cake await them. Yes.

Raven Project: Cast

There’s only a few days left until Nanowrimo. As such, it’s time to actually get started on a little planning. So let’s start with the characters.

Lira Ebon
A 19 year old former gymnast, she’s started in university in hopes of finding something else to do with her life. She is full grown at 4’4″ and seems to be grossly underweight at 68 pounds, though her physique seems normal. She’s also a vegetarian not for any ethical reasons but because she can’t seem to digest meat.

She was adopted by the Ebon family as a child, who have treated her well and given her a good childhood. Besides having to be rushed to the hospital on several occasions due to very fragile bones, she has lead a relatively normal life.

Morgan Beau
He’s started at university because it’s what his parents wanted him to do, but Morgan doesn’t see that as much of an obstacle towards his objective of trying to find the good life where he doesn’t have to work and everything will just work out for him in the end. He has a bit of a nervous twitch now and then, seeming to know things are coming, but will usually brush those off fairly easily.

Morgan has two basic settings to his personality. He’s either cheery, laid back and tries not to worry about anything or he’s tired, grumpy and full of pessimistic and snappy comebacks for any suggestion made.

Jayde Ng
A fairly outgoing young woman, she is a bit of a girly girl, though keeps her strong opinions and holds her own very well. She is currently working in customer service and is working hard to maintain both grades as well as a job while she is in school, hoping to soon move out and earn her independence. Ever an overachiever, she is set on maintaining a high GPA regardless.

She wears brown colour contacts to cover her strange eyes, one of which is golden. She’s quite self conscious of this and usually keeps a spare contact on her just in case to hide the abnormality.

Shane Towers
Laid back yet strangely grounded for someone his age, he seems to be a quick study and works hard to keep his grades up, though he also is more than willing to go around finding a party if he has simply had enough with work for the day. He’s very social and has a habit to use rather bad puns in conversation to lighten the mood.

Shane has a tendency to get overprotective and worry heavily for the well being of others when given the opportunity. He tries hard not to meddle, but wants people to be well so long as he is around and can sometimes mother people and get on their nerves.

Calvin Chen
He was raised in an international school in Hong Kong along with his brother who had left for school a year before. He was happy to be sent to join his brother at school, though he rarely ever mentions him now that he’s here. He does the work given to him in class as asked, but is uncertain about the educational path hes chosen to pursue.

He’s getting used to life on the other side of the ocean fairly quickly, taking on the punk fashion and getting himself used to the culture in that way. He’s a bit quiet, though nice enough if you actually talk to him.

Liz Lovel
A year older than the rest, she’s here to show them around and get them used to the ropes. She’s actually a pretty quiet person for the most part, though helpful and anxious to show them the lighter side of school life.

She’s another girl who’s lead a perfectly average life. She has a few allergies that make it seem she’s sick some of the time, but the majority of the time she will brush it off and continue on with the group, lending a hand where it’s needed and usually trying to take a back seat and let everyone else try for themselves.

So, nice normal characters with nice, normal lives. All of them are just starting their first year of university. I am going to have so much fun breaking their poor little minds.

Of course, I’m lying about a few of the characters too…

Dammit Plot Bunny

As always seems to happen when I’m waiting for Nanowrimo to get here, I have a plot bunny. It’s an idea for a series and something that I’ve touched on before.

Alice in Wonderland.

For some reason, I’m coming up with ideas on how to make it a whole series about Alice trying to free Wonderland. Wonderland has been plunged into darkness and is starting to claim other worlds. The white rabbit comes to plead for her help and Alice goes, but fails to save Wonderland in book one. What she does manage to do, however, is learn that the dark force behind Wonderland moved into Neverland. She leaves as they’re taking it over and takes with her their ability to open their boarders into other realms. Too late for Neverland now, but when she leaves, she takes their ability to expand into her world any longer.

Book two not only does she realize that she did this, but she meets the first refugee. Peter Pan ran away from Neverland. She tries to hide him and he pleads with her to come back with him and save his home. This fails, as does her attempt to hide her at the school and he’s sent away into foster care until they can locate his parents. Which they won’t be able to and he is soon enough out of their care, but vanished for the time being. That or he’ll become her flying cat and she’ll be utterly unable to break that curse.

She’ll also encounter Arthur, who will be able to assimilate into school with her thanks to Snow White due to that subplot.  And others will probably show up throughout the series. meanwhile, Alice is going to slowly grow magical and more powerful, probably fall in love once or twice if I can figure out how to do romance non-cheesy and eventually take on the big bad of the series.

It all takes place at a boarding school. Alice was sent off because of Wonderland in the first place. Borrowing from the Wizard of Oz sequel a little, she’s sent away because she became obsessed with Wonderland upon her return and her parents couldn’t take it. So they sent her away and she returns home on occasion, though not often as now her parents are travelling constantly and she will often not see them for years on end. She suspects that they may have separated and neglected to tell her too. They are awfully busy with work, after all.

Or something. We’ll plot this thing out proper once November ends and I have a little Christmas time inspiration.

This Year’s Options

So it’s getting closer and closer to November and I’m looking into my options for what to write this year. The list was initially ten options long, but I took out the ones that I’ve only had the concept for a year. I should be getting the older ones written first, right?

And if you notice these have different types of summaries, I copied last years over that didn’t get written and added to the list.

Arcleo
Traditional fantasy story where I get to make a prophesy absolutely meaningless. The main character is a vapid selfish girl who wants to be princess and is convinced that she is the true princess of an overtaken land not because of the mark on her arm (The one that’s supposed to mark the princess but appeared on every baby girl in the neighboring lands) but because she thinks she deserves better than hard work in an inn for the rest of her life.

Raven Project
A class of first year university students get subjected to genetic experimentation and do pretty much nothing about it. They’re scared, don’t know what to do and have seen the footage of the last class who tried to fight and run away getting mowed down along with the rest of their families. And that last class looked a lot like they did. Told from the perspective of the least likely success of the story, a girl who, with the help of a serum and a few long moments of agony, can grow a forty foot long wingspan.

Background Noise
Once upon a time there was a sad little lonely girl. She got a voice in her head. That voice wouldn’t go away when she grew up and she was the only teenager with imaginary friends. She also had a book of words she had to memorize and never say, but that didn’t make sense so she never really did it. And then she got whisked away to a weird place where a big monster immediately attacked her and she realized the voice in her head was telling the truth (Or she had gone insane) and everything goes to shit. And then gets better. Yay!

Darkling
This one focuses around Rin, a lovely young girl who everyone wants dead because it’s time for the chosen one to be sacrificed, though no one knows she’s the chosen one yet. So her friends are looking for the chosen one so they can kill her properly, the bad guys are looking for her because if they kill her first they win and her mother is just pissed off with her one night and randomly beats her shitless.

Creatures in the Halls
Sandra is a new teacher at the school, but already she has made quite the impact on several students. These students know that the school is haunted by something and that she seems to not only know that these things are there, but knows how to get rid of them. There’s something more at work here, though, and Sandra can only do so much at once. Though she tries to defend the students and purify the school, others may have to take her place if she falls to the creatures.

FFTS 2
After Aiden returned from backpacking for the last several months, he returned to find his best friend had gone missing for several months and refuses to talk about it. They start at school only to find not only does Caelin already know several people, but they have history. Aiden, meanwhile, discovers some new things about himself and becomes entwined in a conflict where he is missing several peices of background information like who these people are, what is Carcer and why are they all terrified of the girl who seems scared just to be outside?

A Nano Excerpt

Okay, so I wrote this in a haze and my brain apparently was on crack. So this is an excerpt from chapter 8 of Sybil of Destiny, my lovely nano novel.

He made his way into observation, the room littered with images on the screens covering three walls and panels all over to help him navigate. He went to one and started hunting through them, looking for something to make sense of. A few buttons later, he had turned on voice command and was leaning in close to try and see the picture.

“Glados, show only exterior cameras,” he said. The computer shut down any of the interior cameras watching specified corridors and the screens enlarged to fill in the extra space. With a decent resolution now, he could start checking.

“Glados, run all exterior scans for life forms. Start in the direction of the city and seep clockwise.”

The computer panels glowed pleasantly, a face appearing in keyboard characters. A period, an underscore, then a period. The face lit up into a smile and appeared to speak. “This scan will take several minutes. Is this all right?”

“Yes.”

“Please wait.” The computer’s voice was pleasant enough, a woman’s who seemed about as ambivalent as Snow when she was around. But this next part, the programmers of the system had some strange sense of humour about. As always, when waiting for a system to start working or a scan to be completed, the computer would sing.

“This was a triumph,” it began, sounding quite pleased with itself despite Maverick looking utterly annoyed. “I’m making a note here, huge success! It’s hard to overstate my satisfaction. Apeture science. We do what we must because we can.” Maverick, as always, wondered what kind of a place Apeture Science was if they were making a robot that sang a song about them. “For the good of all of us, except the ones who are dead.”

Wait, did it just say, “Except the ones who are dead”?

“But there’s no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying until you run out of cake! And the science gets done and you make a neat gun for the people who are still alive.”

This song was a little… disturbing.

“I’m not even angry. I’m being so sincere right now. Even though you broke my heart and killed me.”

Wait, what?

“And tore me to pieces. And threw every piece into a fire.”

This song was a little more disturbing than a moment ago.

“As they burned it hurt because I was so happy for you. And now these points of data make a beautiful line.”

On screen here, a heart appeared. He wasn’t sure if that had ever happened before, but the only time he was ever in here was to get a walkthrough of how the system worked. And he’d never actually listened to all of this. What was wrong with these people?

“And we’re out of beta, we’re releasing on time! So I’m glad I got burned, think of all the things we learned for the people who are still alive.”

Again with the implication of death. The makers of this thing were disturbed.

“Go ahead and leave me. I think I prefer to stay inside. Maybe you’ll find someone else to help you. Maybe black mesa. That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance. Anyway this cake is great. It’s so delicious and moist.”

And what was with the cake?

“Look at me still talking when there’s science to do. When I look up there it makes me glad I’m not you. I’ve experiments to run; there is research to be done for the people who are still alive. And believe me I am still alive. I’m doing science and I’m still alive. I feel fantastic and I’m still alive. By your dying I’ll still be alive. And when you’re dead I’ll be still alive. Still alive. Still alive.”

Well. He wasn’t going to trust this computer anymore. Or, in any event, he wasn’t going to listen to that song ever again.

Still, it wasn’t done yet. The scans were still running and the song was already starting to repeat. “This was a-”

And then it stopped, interrupted by a strange drum beat and a mediocre sounding tune. And another voice began to sing. “We’re no stranger to love,” it started, Maverick staring at it in complete and utter confusion. It wasn’t going to repeat the infernally disturbing song? “You know the rules and so do I. A full commitment’s what I’m thinking of. You wouldn’t get this from any other guy.”

Okay. They used to have very good narcotics, clearly. Because this was completely insane.

“I just wanna tell you how I’m feeling. Gotta make you underst- Scan complete,” the regular computer voice began again. On second thought, perhaps that other song was better. Now he was a little perturbed by the computer speaking to him. It might want to roast his flesh.

Nanowrimo

Technically, this is a Nano thing, so it’s a writing prompt. Category right. Baha. And I’m not waiting til tomorrow! I wish this was in cam form so you could hear me actually rant and ramble. It’s so much more fun that way. But ah well, until the computer gets fixed.

Nanowrimo is coming and I have several projects to choose from to work on for the month and get done for once. And I never know which one to do, so I’m going to try and leave that up to everyone but me for the moment. As in anyone reading this. So here are the stories and a little blurb on them all.

Arcleo

Transmundane
Once upon a time a girl managed to remember the strangest dreams. Dreams where these people came in and took her out into the rest of the collective subconscious to try and keep people from going around and “fixing” other people’s subconscious. And then it started to happen while she was daydreaming too. But she could do more in them now that she was getting used to it. And then, one day she got into an accident and got stuck there. Or maybe she didn’t. I haven’t decided yet.

Genetically Impaired
Damien is a jackass and he doesn’t die. This is how he got to be immortal, from plowing a car into a shoddily made building in the middle of the forest to his escape, recapture, and how he opened up their doors to human experimentation. And supposed ethical treatment of them too. Ethical, of course, meaning they would live like kings and never be allowed outside if they managed to physically maim them in any way, which they usually did.

Sybil of Destiny
In the distant future a war no one remembers has destroyed most of the world. Those who are left liner in small refuge shelters, trying to maintain themselves, save other survivors and keep from getting raided. Upon the recovery of a strange young woman from the mountains who appears to not have come to any harm in the fallout, they ponder over what the hell is going on. And how she’s managing to do the things she does. Oh, and she’s a Sue, but this is a fun Sue story.

Darkling
Another Sue story. This one focuses around Rin, a lovely young girl who everyone wants dead because it’s time for the chosen one to be sacrificed. Atlantis Project
A top secret, formerly government funded experiment has been invaded by small children. This is the story of the children who managed to break in, run through and sneak into the gate to what they called Atlantis, a strange land where the world has been destroyed. The people are aliens that are horribly racist/classist against their own kind and technologically advanced. Humans with poor immune systems that come through, however, discover that they develop strange powers that are supposed to be used to help the people as per contract. As kids unbound by contract, however, they make their own way,

OMG! It’s a plot!

Plot time! White Mice. I have characters, now I need plot.

So, it’s the start of a new year and the start of reopening some very old dormitories. The first night is a party, complete with meeting new people and a little drinking for good measure. Not that everyone managed to get to get to all of that. Eight of them went to sleep early.

Late that night after the party had wound down and everyone had gone to sleep, five of them met up in the attic, some aware of it and others more surprised that they ended up there. Not that they were left to mull in their confusion long as strange and horrific creatures came to attack them and they were forced to act, lashing out at them although, as they vanish, they realize that something is amiss.

This is when the final three appear from the middle of the room. Dawn, Di and Ezra are not so much apologetic, Di and Ezra actually laughing more than anything else, while Dawn gets right down to business. Now that they all know each other’s secrets, they can get down to the matter of the hunters, a large organized group with the intent of hunting them down and killing anyone with powers, that are coming after them in a matter of minutes.

They manage to successfully detain them and send them away, trapping several things inside an igloo in front of the building. Dawn tagged it with something before going to sleep herself. Thus, the White Mice, a prank group was born. No one else realized it until the morning, when they found that everyone had been admiring the handiwork of the igloo. They all rather liked the idea of pulling a few more pranks around campus.

All was going all right at first, finding that the hunters were actually still on campus trying to catch them and pulling pranks coinciding with sabotaging the surveillance on the eight of them. Dawn and Don ended up orchestrating all of this, giving one another code names so that “The Dons” wasn’t kept. Not that it worked, but they tried.

Dawn was taken out of commission early on by some of the hunters, removing her charm and unleashing her, leaving her unapproachable and unavailable for consultation. Angry at the attack on Dawn, they went looking for them to find that they were ready for them. They managed to escape, taking Di to a small place pointed out by Ezra for treatment. Tori went back for Dawn, making a new charm for her and dragging her out of it.

Needing a way out, Gabriel stepped up and found them an escape and a place to hide out for a little while until everyone had recovered. This escape was an abandoned house that they live in for a while, doing house-y type things while some of them late at night located places with the hunters and attacked, taking out weapon stores and surveillance and such.

And now’s where I get cryptic because it’s climax material, but I’m adding it because I want a plot in full to go back to.

They find the big central HQ and they go and attack it, thinking if they take it out the whole thing will collapse. So they go and they fight and someone dies (OMG! Who woulda thought I’d kill off a character?!) and then they go back home and Dawn tells them that they didn’t take out central and no one believes her until they’re attacked on the way back. So Dawn’s not dead. She sees the future, she can avoid death for a good while, neh?

They return to school, walk in on their own funeral and decide to split up, since it’s best for all of them. They’ve become the notorious 8 or 7 and everything is ended with all of them going off on new lives.

And that’s all. 2 more days. 2 MORE DAYS!
